Community Recreation encompasses the areas of aquatics, community development, sport, and fitness.  For those who want to deliver programs to the community to get them more active and to have more fun, this is the course to take.
Certificate III in Community Recreation [SRC30206]

Those who complete the Certificate III in Community Recreation may go on to work as Activity Instructors (eg, water safety), Recreation Officers, Pool Lifeguards, Supervisors and Pool Operators (and other titles) working in a recreation facility or environment. Examples of the types of work this person could do are:
  • Operate the plant and equipment of an aquatic facility to maintain water quality to health standards;
  • Supervise other colleagues to conduct basic maintenance tasks;
  • Facilitate a variety of recreation initiatives using a community development framework;
  • Plan and conduct a variety of recreation events, activities or promotions;
  • Work as part of a team to conduct Vacation Care/Holiday Programs for a recreation organisation/facility;
  • Plan and conduct activities to meet the needs of clients from specific communities; and,
  • Instruct a specific activity to improve client's skills such as recreational dance.
The requirements for a Certificate III in Community Recreation will comprise achievement of twenty-two (22) to twenty-five (25) units of competency from a set of Core units of competency PLUS the specified Stream units of competency from the Community Recreation stream PLUS a specialisation area.

Certificate IV in Community Recreation [SRC40206]

Those who complete the Certificate IV in Community Recreation will have the competency to work independently at a broad range of venues/environments with a variety of different client groups. Persons with this level of competency have the ability to plan, conduct and evaluate activities of others. Persons with this level of competency have the ability to deal with unpredictable and non–routine situations. Occupations include Recreation Officers (large facilities/organisation), Instructor in Charge, Duty Manager (and other titles) working in a recreation facility or environment. Examples of the types of work this person could do are:
  • Act as Duty Manager to ensure smooth day to day operations of a specific area of a recreation facility;
  • Supervise staff responsible for the operation of the plant and equipment of an aquatic facility;
  • Organise the recreation programs and activities for a facility or organisation;
  • Plan and conduct a variety of complex recreation events, activities or promotions;
  • Coordinate Vacation Care/Holiday Programs for a recreation organisation/facility; and,
  • Supervise a team of activity specific instructors (Learn to Swim programs).
The requirements for a Certificate IV in Community Recreation will comprise achievement of twenty-eight (28) units of competency from a set of Core units of competency PLUS the specified Stream units of competency from the Community Recreation stream PLUS a minimum of eight (8) elective Units of Competency from any endorsed Training Package of which a minimum of five (5) Units of Competency must be from the Sport and Recreation Industry Training Package.
