The vocational outcomes for this qualification are primarily those of a sports trainer, sport massage therapist, and strength and conditioning coach.
Certificate III in Sport (Athlete Support Services) [SRS30506]

By completing the qualification the Certificate III in Sport (Athlete Support Services) with a specialty in Sports Trainer, the student will be able to:
  • perform pre- and post-game/event taping, bandaging and first aid of athletes;
  • provide treatment of injuries;
  • develop warm-up, stretching and cool-down programs for athletes; and,
  • implement strategies for dealing with medical conditions in a sport setting.
The requirements for a Certificate III in Sport (Athlete Support Services) will comprise achievement of twenty-one (21) units of competency including specific Core units PLUS the specified Stream units of competency from the functional area of Athlete Support Services PLUS the Sports Trainer specialisation. The student will also be required to take three (3) elective units of competency from any Training Package within the Sport and Recreation Industry or from any other endorsed Australian Training Package from any other industry. These electives could be from the areas of Coaching & instruction, Sports Massage, and General Coaching Principles.

Certificate IV in Sport (Athlete Support Services) [SRS40406]

The Certificate IV in Sport (Athlete Support Services) offers the student a number of options to pursue a career in Sport in the areas of massage therapy, sports trainer, and strength and conditioning. In addition to learning more in-depth techniques as a sports trainer, the student will also be able to specialise in massage therapy and/or strength and conditioning. As a massage therapist, the student will develop the following knowledge and skills:
  • develop and implement a massage therapy plan for an athlete or team; and,
  • undertake related administrative tasks such as maintaining financial records, stock control and promoting products/services to clients.
By focusing on strength and conditioning, the student will develop the following knowledge and skills:
  • observe athlete’s performances to determine the level of instruction required;
  • plan, conducting, evaluating and modifying individualised training programs;
  • supervise the physical development of athletes;
  • undertake related administrative tasks such as report writing, maintaining financial records and stock control; and,
  • organise and liaise with coaching and other sports science support staff.
The requirements for a Certificate IV in Sport (Athlete Support Services) comprise achievement of nineteen (19) to twenty-seven (27) units of competency including specific Core units PLUS the specified Stream units of competency from the functional area of Athlete Support Services PLUS a specialisation in the area of massage therapy, sports trainer or strength and conditioning. The student will also be required to take three (5) elective units of competency from any Training Package within the Sport and Recreation Industry (Community Recreation, Fitness, Outdoor Recreation, Sport) or from any other endorsed Australian Training Package from any other industry.

Certificate III in Fitness [SRF30206] / Certificate IV in Sport (Athlete Support Services) [SRS40406]

The vocational outcomes in the fitness industry are primarily those of a fitness instructor, fitness trainer and fitness specialist. Other functional areas in the fitness industry include administration, program management, facility management, and community development. The fluid nature of fitness programs and vocational outcome means that the particular competencies required are dependent on the individual’s and workplace situation. Those who complete the Certificate III in Fitness will develop the following knowledge and skills:
  • identify clients’ general fitness requirements, provide a basic screening form to clients, and advise client on fitness facilities and services;
  • take a client through a process of screening, a discussion of fitness goals, and a basic fitness appraisal in preparation for writing a fitness program;
  • develop basic fitness programs for fitness industry clients;
  • provide the basic applied exercise science required for fitness instructors;
  • maintain equipment commonly used in the fitness industry, and operate it to manufacturer’s specifications;
  • educate clients on the application of basic anatomy and physiology of the major systems of the human body and understand the functional significance of these structures in relation to movement and exercise;
  • provide basic nutritional information and advice to fitness industry clients, who have no dietary or nutritional concerns;
  • provide appropriate advice to specific population clients on participation in fitness appraisals and fitness activities, including the pathology of the more common disease states and conditions encountered within the fitness industry and the limiting effects of the condition on exercise performance and functional capacity;
  • instruct and supervise individual clients in fitness using basic fitness industry equipment; and,
  • provide leadership to groups of clients within a fitness or sport and recreation context.

The Certificate IV in Sport (Athlete Support Services) offers the participant the opportunity to pursue a career the area of strength and conditioning. The student will develop the following knowledge and skills:
  • observe an athlete’s performance to determine the level of instruction required;
  • plan, conduct, evaluate and modify individualised training programs;
  • supervise the physical development of athletes;
  • undertake administrative tasks such as report writing & maintaining financial records;
  • organise and liaise with coaching and other sports science support staff
