The vocational outcomes in the massage industry are primarily those of a massage therapist. This qualification can also be combined with a career in the fitness industry or in the athlete support services including sports trainer.
Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice [HLT40307]

This qualification covers workers who work as basic level massage therapists. It provides skills in therapeutic relaxation massage including basic health assessment and treatment and may be used by people working:
  • within a clinic or in their own clinic
  • in an aged care facility
  • in a health service
  • in a spa facility or
  • in a palliative care facility or hospital.
The subject matter educates the student as to what is needed to practice the basics of massage therapy, mainly therapeutic massage. Upon completion of the qualification, the student will be able to:
  • establish and maintain effective communication with the client/patient throughout all interactions and provide basic counselling as required and as appropriate to facilitate the treatment
  • provide administration for a clinical health practice according to the size and scale of the business;
  • arrange referrals to other health care professionals when required;
  • use specific/medical terminology to communicate with client/patients, fellow workers and health professionals;
  • work effectively in the health industry;
  • follow the organisation’s occupational health and safety policies;
  • comply with infection control policies and procedures;
  • demonstrate commitment to the central philosophies of massage practice;
  • identify and describe the principles and practices of massage;
  • develop knowledge of complementary therapies;
  • administer client/patient basic massage treatment according to the philosophy and practices of a massage therapy framework;
  • select the therapeutic principles to determine treatment; and,
  • interpret information gathered in the health assessment and make and review accurate assessment for basic massage treatment.
The requirements for a Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice comprise achievement of fifteen (15) units of competency including specific Common units PLUS the massage therapy specialisation. The student must also complete an Advanced First Aid Course in order to achieve the qualification.
